How do I transfer files to my website?

Files are usually uploaded (transferred) to the web server via File Transport Protocol (FTP).
If you need FTP, Telnet, Email, or other Internet software, visit Shareware.com. It is a source for the latest Internet applications with ratings and reviews to help you decide which application is best suited for your needs. An FTP tutorial is also available for beginner users who may not be familiar with FTP.
With recent web browsers, you can also upload files from the web-based control panel on your web site.
What is the difference between a web site account and a server?

A web site account means having your own domain name (http://www.yourname.com) without having to install and maintain expensive hardware and software. With a web site account, you utilize our server's storage space, however, you are still professionally represented via your own domain name (www.yourname.com) and your own e-mail address on your own domain name (you@yourname.com).
Will I be able to access my site for updates 24 hours per day?

You have unlimited access via FTP 24-hours a day. As such, you can create and maintain your web pages on your own computer and upload files to your web site at your leisure.
Can I use my account for commercial purposes?

Yes, you can use your account for commercial purposes. The World Wide Web has become the most efficient and cost-effective means of making information available to the users of the Internet community and we encourage our customers to utilize such an enormous medium.
How long does it take to setup a new account?

New accounts are set up in less than 24 hours from the time we receive your order. Once an account is set up an activation notice will be sent to you via email including your user-ID, password, and FTP hostname. You can begin uploading files to your new web site immediately. Web site account users will be given a temporary URL to access their site via the web prior to the completion of either domain registration or domain modification.
Do you provide tech support?

Yes. If you have a question about your web site, send us an email, but make sure you have read the manual first as almost all answers can be found in it. If you notice any serious problem with our harware or the software, you should call us immediately.
Can I subdivide my space and resell it?

Yes, we do allow you to create subdirectories which you can use to offer friends or clients space as long as it is within our policy guidelines. You can also create additional FTP accounts with limited access to a specific directory.
Can I have additional domains point to a subdirectory of my main domain?

Not automatically, but we can modify your account to add this feature. Contact us for current pricing and conditions. If we registered the domain name for you after 01/01/2001 or your domain name registrar provides it's own DNS, you should be able to configure this by yourself from a URL redirection page.
Can I have additional domains pointing to the same main page as my current domain?

Contact us for current pricing and conditions. If we registered the domain name for you after 01/01/2001 or your domain name registrar provides it's own DNS, you should be able to configure this by yourself from a URL redirection page. This is a great way to expand the marketing of your present business.
Are third level domains available? (myname.domain.com)

Yes, we can give you a third level domain name such as anyname.yourdomain.com. The rates are the same as for pointing additional domains, the advantage to these is internic registration is not needed. This means no internic registration fees.
If we registered the domain name for you after 01/01/2001 or your domain name registrar provides it's own DNS, you should be able to configure this by yourself from a URL redirection page.
Are extra POP, FTP, and Telnet accounts available?

Yes, you can add additional login accounts. Log into your control panel at yoursite.com/admin and follow the "Manage Users" link.
Who is InterNIC?

The InterNIC is an independent organization responsible for holding the registration and routing of Internet domain names. Without these people, it would be virtually impossible to maintain sanity on the Internet. Registration fee is $35/year for any dot com/net/org domain name.
Update: As of 01/2001 we provide transfers and registrations for $20/year through eNom.com of course you are free to register your domain name using any registrar of your choice.
What if I go over my traffic allowance?

An email warning will be sent before this actually occurs. You may purchase extra traffic at 1.50 per 100 megabytes or 15.00 per gigabyte.
While your alloted bandwidth (8GB/mo.) is meant to exceed what you would normally need, should you foresee significantly higher bandwidth requirements, let us know ahead of time and we'll be able to provide you with more advantageous bulk rates.
Can I add more space to my site?

Yes, you can purchase extra space at $0.20 per month for each additonal megabyte in increments of 10MB. Again, should you foresee significantly higher space requirements, let us know ahead of time and we'll be able to provide you with more advantageous bulk rates.
Can I install my own cgi scripts?

Yes, each domain has its own cgi-bin subdirectory. We do monitor the system for poorly written scripts which become resource hogs and may have to disable such scripts.
Will Server Side Includes work on your server (SSI)?

Yes, SSI's will parse on any page ending in .sht or .shtml, see the manual.
Can you handle foreign domain names?

Yes. We currently house domains from over 100 countries, for non-internic domain names you will need to file the registration with your local NIC.
What type of java support do you offer?

Currently jdk 1.1.5 or newer is installed on all servers.
As of 12/99 we do not support java servlets.
What is Majordomo?

Majordomo is a full featured mailing list program which gives your customer the ability to subscribe and unsubscribe. This type of list was specifically designed for interaction, and can be run as closed or open, moderated or not. As the list owner you can control all email allowed to be distributed to the list. This is something we recommend for very busy mailing lists with 100 or more people posting daily. For other applications, a typical mailing lists should suffice.
Can I access my domain without the "www" in front?

Yes, you will be able to access the domain address with or without the "www" in front of the domain name. Example: [http://www.yourname.com] or [http://yourname.com] is acceptable, whichever you prefer.
Do you maintain backups of my data?

Yes, we do daily backups of your home and www directories. There is a small charge to pull a backup when requested. Note that you should contact us immediately if you need to recover a file as we only keep a few days worth of data. In case you lost or damaged a web page, you should search for it on Google.com as their cache might still contain your page if it was indexed.
Do you handle the domain registration?

Yes. We'll secure or transfer the domain you want on your behalf if you instructed us to do so when you placed your order.
Can I transfer an existing domain to your servers?

Yes, just be sure to specify that you are requesting a transfer and NOT a new domain. You should keep the service with your current provider until your registrar has completed the transfer process. We will provide you with a temporary IP address so you can mirror the site on our server. All email and web pages will still be accessed from your current site. When the registrar announces the completion of the transfer, there is a 72 hour propagation period when visitors could go to either site. At the end of the 72 hours you should contact your previous host to have them delete the old domain from their server. If you use this same provider for your Internet access you will not be able to access your new site using its domain name until they update their DNS. Depending on your domain registrar, we may be able to file a modification request, one of the current listed contacts must ok the move. The registrar might send you an e-mail that you must ok to have the redirection of your domain completed. If the contact email on your domain has changed from the time you originally registered it, you will need to fax an authorization letter to complete the process using a tracking number we will provide upon request. It is becoming more common for registrar to provide a web based interface were you can login and submit the DNS modification yourself.
How long is it before my domain is active?

Once your domain name has been registered (or transferred, if applicable), it usually takes 24 to 72 hours before it is active as all Internet providers must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect the new site's location.
What type of hardware and software will I be hosted on?

We try to always use the latest hardware, currently all domains are being hosted on Dual Pentium servers with speeds ranging from 900 to 1600 MHz with at least 256 megs of ram or more. The operating system is a customized version of RedHat 7.x with the renowned Apache web server. Click here for more details.
